Depending on length and flexibility, this type is often called a riding whip, riding crop or "bat". It is also sometimes called a "horsewhip" or "horse whip". The other type of whip is a long tapered flexible length of single-strand or plaited (braided) material (usually leather) with a stiff handle. Some whips of this type include the bullwhip and the stockwhip. Each design has many variations and lengths for different purposes, often with different names. As well as these traditional whip types designed for use on animals, there are whip designs that had historic uses for inflicting pain on humans, such as the "cat o' nine tails", knout and others. These devices are used as flogging instruments, a means of control, corporal punishment or torture. Whips today are used primarily in animal training for three main purposes:
When a bullwhip handle is rapidly and properly moved, the tip of the whip can exceed 340 m/s (760 mph) producing a small sonic boom described as a "crack". Whips were the first man-made implements to break the sound barrier. This loud noise is commonly used to drive or direct livestock or teams of harnessed animals, such as oxen or mules. Most horse whips can be used to give commands by touch and can cause pain, but cannot make a "crack". These may include riding crops, dressage whips, and carriage or buggy whips. The exception is the longe whip, which due to its long lash, can be made to crack as well as be used to touch the animal. From Wikipedia under the

After seeing a recent Marth Stewart recipe I went to Wal-Mart to buy the ingredients, one of which was heavy cream. This is what we call whipping cream in the UK. But, at Wal-Mart nobody knew what I was talking about and told me that they only had cream cheese or sour cream. I figured that sour cream wouldn't be a good idea, since the recipe is for scalloped potatoes. In the end they suggested Cool Whip, a frozen cream-substitute. Will it be OK to use this in place of the heavy cream? Asked by l0st - Sat Dec 2 23:52:26 2006 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments A. Oh, good LORD, no. Cool-Whip is a heavily sweetened imitation of whipped cream, suitable for ladling on top of cakes and desserts. It would be ghastly in scalloped potatoes. Sour cream would be far, far better in scalloped potatoes than Cool-Whip. Potatoes and sour cream are a classic in many cultures, from the simple US baked potato to the Eastern European latke (a savoury potato pancake). In fact, sour cream and a really good white Irish cheddar would make a wonderful scalloped potato dish -- possibly with chives and crumbled bacon. Your best bet is simply to go to the nearest grocery store and look for whipping cream (we call it that in the US too.) And while you're at it, see if they have Yukon Gold variety potatoes -- they… [cont.] Answered by Scott F - Sun Dec 3 00:10:57 2006 how do i make real whip cream? Q. i want to make whip cream from the smallest carton on the market. I only want to use sugar nothing eles. i don;t have a mixer so i will be using a whisk and a plastic bowl. my question is how much sugar do i use for a small carton of whiping cream and when do i put the sugar in the whip cream. Asked by Loni L - Sat May 31 00:49:55 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. With a plastic bowl, it will take quite some time. Glass, metal or ceramic are better. Have the utensils and cream thoroughly chilled before beginning to whip. (If you have a blender, that would work to do the job as well, you just have to watch carefully so you don't end up with butter.) The amount of sugar used is a personal preference. You add a bit as you go during the whipping...after the volume increases and before soft peaks stand on their own. Lift your whisk to see if the cream does. If it is a half pint carton, my preference would be 2 tblsps. sugar. Answered by bobi - Sat May 31 01:06:07 2008 What whip cream do they use at Jack In The Box for their oreo cookie shakes?
