A. I had a rott/shepherd mix female dog which I had to put to sleep last year at the age of 13. My female dog weighed 114 lbs. I loved that dog. Great mix. Very smart.

How can I get my 4 year old lab and 4 year old shepherd mix to stay off the sofa when I am not home?
Q. How can I get my 4 year old lab and 4 year old shepherd mix to stay off the sofa when I am not home? They are never allowed on the sofa, they never have been. We moved not too long ago and I have the sofa and a chair in front of the window(its a small house) with a space in between for them to sit and look out. I am trying how to figure this out without totally having to rearrange my house!

A. Probably going the uncomfortable route is best, they will look elsewhere for a cozy place to lay down. A board long enough to reach across all the cushions should work, and you can keep it under the couch when not in use.

is a yellow lab, shepherd mix a good dog for a family with small children.?
Q. I have the oppertunity to get a puppy. But I have small children and don't want an aggressive breed. I noticed there are alot of them for adoption and I don't know why. Do they have a tendency to bite. The dog I am considering is a yellow lab shepherd mix female 2 months old.
Asked by Maryanne - Sun Dec 23 12:39:05 2007 - - 22 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ANY puppy at 2 months old is going to nip &/or bite. That is what puppies do. Labs are particularly mouthy. Keep in mind, this is not to say they are aggressive breeds. Labs and Shepherds are both great family dogs. You also have to consider that at 2 months they are most likely not completely housebroken if at all. You might want to consider a slightly older dog, maybe 2 years old. If you go through a rescue such as PetFinder, you can get a dog that has been fostered for a while so they know the dogs temperament, the dog will be housebroken, up to date on shots, either spayed or neutered, and the foster may even how well they get along with children. Consider rescuing rather than supporting a back yard breeder. You will never regret it.… [cont.]

Is a yellow lab german shepherd mix puppy a good mix for children?
Q. I am getting a yellow lab/german shepherd mix puppy on friday and wonder if people think that this puppy will be a good mix for the kids-ages 15, 9 and 7
Asked by Nikki S - Tue Sep 4 11:21:54 2007 - - 7 Answers - 2 Comments

A. I would think probably so... Yellow Labs are good pets, and German Shepards are protective. The mix should be a great blend for a wonderful pet. Shepards tend to be a bit snippy, but I think the Lab should tame that... Just remember, a pet is what you make of it, treat it will love and it will return the favor. Remember to teach your children about pet care, and loving an animal, and not to pull tails and ears and your family should come together nicely with the new pup.

What does a Yorkie German Shepherd mix looks like?
Q. My freshman year of high school, I think in math class me and my friends were talking about how she was going to get a dog. One of my friends, named Mike said he'd had a cousin that had a Yorkie/German Shepherd mix, but all he told me that it was ugly. Now i'm trying to picture what that dog looked like and how in the world that happened and Is it even possible? ...Idk just came to my mind. He said the mama was the yorkie

A. Not very likely that there IS a Yorky-German shepherd mix. Female Yorkie is too small to breed with male GSD, and couldn't carry the large pups, Male yorkie, even with help is not anatomically large enough to "lock" with as female GSD so impregnating a female GSD by a Yorky would be virtually impossiple. Artificial insemination is probably the only way it could happen. I think you'd better look for a different mix dot...one where the dogs are closer to the same size.

What is the temperment of an Akita/German Shepherd mix?
Q. I have been looking everywhere for some info on an Akita Shepherd's personality, but since it's a mix all the articles say you can't predict it. Don't answer if you're going to say that, I want to know if it's stubborn, smart, good with kids, has a tendency to be aggressive, whatever.

A. Any site that says you can predicat a temperment of a mix bred is incorrect. The things you can 99% guarantee in this mix Number1; Akita x German shepherd is irresponsible bred MUTT for MONEY Number 2; This mix will be prone to aggression, behavioural issues and genetic faults due to poor breeding, they WILL use totally unsuitable breeding dog which should NEVER be used for breeding in the 1st place, including parents with hip, elbow issues, eye issues, aggression. Unless adopted from a shelter, pound or rescue, the thoroughly temperment test prior to putting the dogs up & the agressive dogs are euthanised. Does anyone else have a Border Collie German shepherd mix?
Q. I have an 8 week old border collie german shepherd mix and I wanted to know about how big she is going to get. Does anyone have any idea how much she will weigh? And if she will be bigger than a full blood border collie or what? Her dad was a normal border collie size and her mom is a huge german shepherd. I plan on taking her with me to run so she will get lots of exercise
Asked by Lovin my baby - Fri Nov 13 16:36:47 2009 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments

A. I DID, he died early this year. but there is no way to compare the two, because they are mutts, so there could be any combo of genes in there. one thing that is almost guaranteed, you will need to exercise that dog! EDIT: my dog was medium, about 50 lbs, and he was a very good dog. yours can be anywhere from 27 lbs (low end of BC standard) to 85 lbs (high end of GSD standard) I would guess she would be between the BC and GSD in both height and weight.

Will a german shepherd mix's ears stand up?
Q. I am looking into adopting a german shepherd mix because I want to adopt and save a puppy but I love german shepherds. And I know I sound picky, but I would prefer if the ears didnt stand up. I want a floppy eared dog. So I wanna know if they always will stand up, or if there is a specific cross breed that will make the ears stay floppy.
Asked by angelofstars18 - Mon Apr 28 01:54:49 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would guess that if it is mixed with something with floppy ears, it will probably have a 50/50 chance of having floppy ears. If mixed with another erect-eared dog, it will likely have ears that stand. If you adopt an adult or puppy over 8 months, you will already know if it is important to you.

Which Is A Better Family Pet? Terrier/Spaniel, Great Pyrenees/ Shepherd Mix, Husky Shepherd Mix?
Q. Our family is looking for a puppy (about 12 months & younger) of any of the listed breeds. We currently have 2 adult cats and we are also looking for an adult Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix. We are planning to move into a house with a rather large amount of land for these animals BEFORE we get any of the animals. We have researched on this many times, but no helpful information has come up If anyone can answer how these dogs behave, your response will be greatly appreciated. Any other information is welcomed too

A. the amount of land you have makes no difference because you cannot allow them to run loose. you really need to do a LOT more research on breeds. there is absolutely no similarities among most of the breeds you have listed other than the herding huskies are hot recommended with cats as they are killers of small animals. pyrs are flock guardians & not terribly social. the BC/aussie are highly intelligent dogs needing tons of exercise & jobs to do. if you do not provide them with something to herd, they will herd the kids or the furniture. they herd by nipping. ditto GSD's

Q. I fed him Purina One for 10 years, but recently switched to mix of wet and the new Sam's that days "like Eukanuba". He licks until the fur comes off. I think that is because of an itch.
Asked by scmounty - Tue Jun 23 17:52:51 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dogs lick paws for lots of reasons, including anxiety and allergies. If you try giving him benadryl (2 mg per pound of body weight every 8 hours) and the licking decreases or stops, you're probably working with an allergy. Only your vet can sort out what he is allergic to. Did the licking start when you changed the food? Did anything in the environment change?

A. It could mean that she has some chow or shar pei in her. It could also mean that she just has dark pigment on her tongue. Contrary to popular belief, blue/purple/black markings on a dog's tongue are NOT an accurate indicator that the dog is a chow chow mix. I have known several purebred (papered and registered) shepherds and labs that have had spots on their tongues. It's often a fault in the show ring for breeds other than chows or shar pei, but it's not uncommon.

A. With a mixed breed, it's hard to tell which genes she may inherit. It's possible she could get as large as a standard shepherd at over 100lbs, but may also only get as large as the other parent.

A. Petfinder.com German Shepherd mixes are pretty common in shelters across the country. This site will help find some in your area. You can also check your local dog shelter. Do not search kijji.com. Too many backyard breeders and puppy mills advertise with this site. It's an "online marketplace." You should buy shoes online, not dogs. Petfinder.com is far more reputable and lists dogs *for adoption* as opposed to sick puppies *for sale.* The difference? Rescues that have adoption fees are not for profit, backyard breeders and puppy mills are strictly for profit.

What are health issues that happen later in life for this kind of puppy? 2. How can we manage it so its not around rabbits? 3. Will my cat be okay? 4. How do we manage it when we aren't home? 5. Asked by Katelyn - Fri Feb 29 21:06:13 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Health issues include epilepsy, hip dysplasia, eye problems, and some heart problems. This dog may or may not get these problems. Yes mixed breeds can get health problems from their parents just like purebreds do. I'm not sure what you mean by your second question. You can keep your dog from rabbits by providing it a fenced in area, a tether, or by keeping it as a house dog. To train the dog not to chase rabbits sometimes is difficult but it can be done. I would recommend that you contact a trainer in your area. Depends on the cat and the dog. Some dogs can be aggressive towards cats. At first I would not allow the dog to be alone with the dog until I know how it will act with the cat. Both of these breeds are herding dogs so… [cont.]

Asked by chickenfrog04 - Tue Jun 9 13:28:41 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If he's hyper maybe he has too much testosterone in his system. Get him neutered if he hasn't been that usually works to calm him down; also try getting a trainer if you don't know how to train him yourself or at least try watching Animal Planet's "It's Me Or The Dog" with Victoria Stillwell. She has can get even the most stubborn of dogs to do what she wants in no time flat. Also a german shepherd is a working dog and need to to be exercised at least 2 hours a day, have you tried that yet? Take him running on the leash, throw a disc for him to jump up in the air and catch, play ball with him, take him for a good walk. If you had done your research on the breed you would have known that. I didn't even have to research them and I know… [cont.]

Border Collie/German Shepherd Mix Size and Herding Instinct?
Q. I recently bought a border collie/german shepherd mix and they said it should be around 40-50 pounds and a "medium" size dog. Is this going to be the case? And will the border collie's herding instinct be suppressed by the mixing of breeds?
Asked by manntastic - Tue Apr 21 14:32:25 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 50 pounds and up I would say. My border is very lean and weighs 45 pounds, GSDs are typically larger I would guess her to weigh more like 65 pounds grown. As for herding instinct borders have VERY high herding instincts you can mix anything you feel like in there its still going to show. GSDs typically are not as drivey as borders but they are a herding breed and its definitely there and its not going to suppress anything. I had a rescue who was border GSD mix (maybe with a little lab) she weighed in at around 65-70 pounds, she was territorial and had herding instincts not as strong as my working lines border collies but she could herd if I put her on stock and would chase small animals outside the home (if I where to let her)
