What is a good companion dog for a German Shepherd?
Q. We have a two-year-old female German Shepherd (Luna) who is very sociable and loves to play with other dogs. However we cannot get another dog as large as Luna is because of the considerable damage that she has done to our home already. What is a good type of small to medium sized dog to pair with a German Shepherd, preferably one that is easily trained and is not too high energy? Please be specific in your answer. Thank you!

A. Any. Dogs don't care. It's more about temperament. If they click they click. Take her to the shelter or Rescue so she can meet the available dogs. See who she gets along with best.

What defines a shepherd and mastiff type dog?
Q. There are many shepherd type dogs and many mastiff type dogs. There are also many dogs that look a lot like a shepherd yet aren't a shepherd and there are many really big dogs that aren't mastiffs. Have I confused you enough yet? My question is...what makes a shepherd dog a shepherd dog and what makes a mastiff a mastiff? I want to know what defines shepherd type dogs and mastiff type dogs, not the german shepherd and mastiff breeds. Sorry for any confusion.

A. Mastiff-types are massive - muscular, broad chested, and tall. They have rounded, dome-shaped skulls. They have a pronounced stop (the spot where the muzzle protrudes from the head - Collies do not have a pronounced stop, if that helps). Their eyes often appear to be deep-set. Most have very short fur, but not all. Most have droopy ears that are set wide on the head. Shepherd-types are medium to large. They are more narrow and lithe. They have long narrow muzzles. Their ears are erect and set on top of the head. They usually have denser coats. They have a somewhat deep chest (there should be a definite rise in the body line from the chest to the stomach). Their backs may slope down toward the hindquarters.

Does anyone know how to teach a German Shepherd puppy from biting?
Q. I have a 4 month old German Shepherd and she just loves to bite! No matter what I have tried I can't seem to get her to stop. I know part of this is the puppy in her, but, she is growing fast and I need to correct this before she's 150 pounds! Any advise would be greatly welcomed!

A. hi i know how you feel thankfully my german shepherd (echo) is 17months now and has calmed down ... every time she bites you say not shout a firm NO ! after this replace your hand with a sensible chew toy that she likes .Get her as many toys as possible and ignore her when she bites . she may be teething and what we tried was a special rubber toy we put it in the freezer and cooled it he loved it and it soothed his gums and he lost intrest in biting another method i have been told is to yelp like a pup when she bites ( i did not try it so whether it works or not i do not know lol ) also praise her when she chews her toys and not you lol .
