A police service is a public force empowered to enforce the law and provide security through the legitimized use of force.

The term is most commonly associated with police services of a state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. The word comes via French Policier, from Latin politia ("civil administration"), from ancient Greek πόλις ("city").

Are police officers given a discrimate test before becoming a officer of the people?
Q. I was just wondering this. I live in a small town and the police officers here are really racists. They say they're not but they are. If your're riding the wrong vehicle they will be quick to pull you over. Why isn't there some test that test how discrimate a person is before becoming a police officer? Sorry about the spelling... Discriminate..I tend to type too fast..haha

A. Isn't there a Spelling test YOU have to take before trying to insult Police Officers? It's spelled "Discriminate" as in a "Discrimination Test" and there is no such thing, but I'll bet they are no more racist than you are by stereotyping all your town Police Officers. Why don't you worry a little less about those Awful Meanies and concentrate more on your academic endeavors Sweetie? Who knows, maybe with the right education you could be the next Chief Of Police and change things for the better.

Do police need a warrant signed by a judge to arrest someone in their own home for telephone harassment?
Q. Can you appeal and or sue the Police department if they didn't provide an arrest warrant? Are civil rights violated for not providing a warrant for arrest? What if they forced their way in without letting them in?

A. Depends on where you live. Every state's different. In Washington State, police can force their way into your house to effect an arrest without a warrant. Also in Washington State, a cop doesn't have to have a warrant to arrest someone for harassment. There's something called the misdemeanor exception rule. The following is a sample of misdemeanor crimes that a cop doesn't have to observe his/herself in order to make an arrest: Harassment Assault Violation of a Court Order Indecent Liberties (aka indecenet exposure) Criminal Trespass Possession of Marijuana < 40 grams Minor In Possession of Alcohol For felony arrests, the cop either has to witness the crime or have an warrant to make the arrest. For misdemeanor (and gross… [cont.]

How do police decide when to use unmarked cars to pursue a known criminal?
Q. The situation: A guy escaped from a prison work detail, stole the prison van and took a citizen hostage. Now he's trying to get away via the freeway in the hostage's car. He's holding a knife to the driver's throat and telling the driver where to go. Would police use unmarked vehicles as well as cruisers to pursue this suspect?

A. In this situation, the police would use any car available. This is a high profile situation and a very dangerous one. All available police units would likely be involved. Helicopters would undoubtedly blanket the sky, news choppers and police choppers alike. SWAT would obviously get involved and would probably puruse in vans or armored vehicles. Spike strips would be deployed. No one would try to PIT though because its too dangerous for the hostage. SWAT might post up on overpasses with sniper rifles to possibly attempt to shoot out the engine. They were going to do that in Dallas during one of their most highly profiled pursuits involving a semi-truck with a hostage but I beleive the suspect finally stopped on his own. For a sniper shot… [cont.]
