Herding is the act of bringing individual animals together into a group (herd), maintaining the group and moving the group from place to place—or any combination of those. While the layperson uses the term "herding", most individuals involved in the process term it mustering, "working stock" or droving.

Herding can be performed by people or trained animals such as herding dogs. Some animals instinctively gather together as a herd while some predators, such as wolves and dogs have instinctive herding abilities. Herding can also be done using wire through which electricity is sent.

Herding is used in agriculture to manage domesticated animals. The people whose occupation it is to herd or control animals often have herd added to the name of the animal they are herding to describe their occupation (shepherd, goatherd, cowherd). These -herds may use dogs to assist them and a competitive sport has developed in some countries where the combined skill of man and dog is tested and judged in a Trial.

Is there any real difference in male or female herding dogs?
Q. I don't think so at all, they're just different genders. But..Is there any difference in male or female dogs that herd livestock?

A. I have 5 border collies. Four (2 females, 2 males) of them will herd livestock and there really is hardly any difference between them. The only thing I have noticed in all my years of training and experience has been the younger the dog (male and female) the more unpredictable they are. In a training ring they may lie down and away on command, but when out in a field they may get out of hand and single out a particular livestock animal and go for it. But none of my four have been different. Now in just day-to-day aspects with temperament, the girls are usually more unpredictable in that one minute they are moody and independent and the other times they will be nudging you for attention. I prefer my male borders. Their temperament is… [cont.]

How do you train a herding dog commands such as, outrun, lift, fetch, wear, walk in, come by, away to me, etc?
Q. I know how to train basic obedience, such as sit, down, stay, heel , and come. I just need to know how to further the dog's training and how old do they have to be? The dogs are 10 week old border collies.

A. It is never too early to start their training. The sooner you do, the more ingrained the behavior will become. If you are lucky enough to have a trained dog available, the easiest way by far is to have an example for them to follow. This is how I train the majority of my Aussies to herd. If you are having to train cold, then you may want an assistant for the away behaviors to guide them in the proper directions. Herding is something that Border Collies will do naturally, so if you catch them performing a desired behavior, even if you didn't ask for it, praise them with that command. As long as you are consistent, then their training will not be difficult.
