German shepherd weight?
Q. Just wondering what's an accurate estimate of my female German shepherd's adult weight? She's 4months old and is already 20kgs and is not fat at all, how heavy do you think she may reach? Yeh her mum was slighty above average in height and weight and her dad was a monster very muscular and tall, she's currently around 1 metre in length and around 90 cms in height.

A. That sounds like how big our German Shepherd was at that age. When she was fully grown she was bigger than the average standard and weighed 90 pounds. She wasn't overweight, her dad was just huge.

Female German Shepherd Weight?
Q. I know all dogs are different, but on average, how much should a female german shepherd weigh at 10 weeks old? Ummm 10-15lbs! Mine is 17 and is ridiculously skinny. You can see her ribs and everything!
Asked by Vicky - Wed Jun 25 02:20:31 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They all grow at different rates, just like our own kids. GSD puppies at a healthy weight are not really chunky and round like many other breeds. They lose the puppy fat fast and through their youngster months, they may appear too skinny, esp. with the little waist that GSDs have. A general rule of thumb is that you should be able to feel their ribs quite easily - but not tight up against the skin. If your think your dog is underweight and you try to pack on the pounds too quickly, you will risk hip damage - too much weight on the developing bones. GSDs grow and put on weight for 24 months until their chest comes down even with their elbows; female weight when full grown is 65-80 lbs.

A. The GSD is generally anywhere from 50 to 85 lbs. This means that MOST fall into this range. A 95lb GSD could be overweight or it could be just a large GSD.

The weight of a german shepherd puppy?
Q. I have a 9 week old german shepherd puppy who currently weights 12 pounds. Is this normal? The vet said he is a little small and thinks he could be mixed...I really don't think so...he doesnt look like anything else but a german shepherd. He has brindle legs though...but i looked this up and found ACK registered shepherds with brindle legs so it is possible. How big was your GSD at 9 weeks? Any sites that have this information?
Asked by Amber C - Tue Feb 9 11:29:40 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is not uncommon for a German shepherd puppy to be a little lanky. They usually don't fill out to be the powerful dog we recognize until they are about two years old. It is possible that the puppy might be mixed with a similar breed like the Belgian terverun. Unless your vet has noticed a disease that could be hendering his growth, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

how much should my female German shepherd weight at 8 1/2 months?
Q. My female German shepherd's about 8 1/2 months old, and is about 63 pounds...and I know most dogs don't stop growing completely till a year and 1/2, for example my yorkie from age 1 to 1 1/2 went from 3 1/2 pounds to 5 1/2 pounds. So I'm just curious if anyone has a guess on how big she'll get? Or if your GS grew that much from 9 months till 2 years?

A. My friend has a 7 month old female German Shepherd that is 71.5 pounds. They usually stop growing taller at 12-14 months and start filling at until about 2 years old.

Do German Shepherd's always double their 4-month weight?
Q. My German Shepherd puppy (male) weighted in at almost 42 pounds a few weeks ago at the veterinarian. I was told he looked healthy, not too fat. At the time, he was just a week over three months old. The vet told me that GSDs adults usually double their weight of four months. So it seems like a good bet that he ll be close to 100 pounds when he reaches maturity. Is the vet s estimation a good rule of thumb or is it too much of a generalization? Keeping him active is really hard. We walk him a lot (2+ miles). He loves climbing dirt piles, vigorously shaking throw-rugs, and pulling things like boards. Yesterday we found a chopped up Honda Accord in a large field. When I called the police, they were pulling out auto parts to get the… [cont.]

A. Simply a generalization, but accurate enough. However, this isn't just true for German shepherds, but for the majority of medium sized dogs. 100 lbs is big for a German shepherd, as the standard has them falling around 70-85 lbs, but it's fine if that's because your German shepherd is especially tall. However, if your German shepherd is the normal height (~24 inches at the withers), and weights, say, 80 lbs, he is NOT underweight, so do not feed him until he is 100 lbs, because then it would be unhealthy, and rather foolish. 42 lbs is large for such a young puppy - looks like you got a big boy on your hands! You can expect him to get to 100 lbs or so, but he might end up being 80 lbs or 110 lbs, who knows? Just keep him healthy, well… [cont.]

German Shepherd Weight Issue?
Q. Well, my baby has grown up (for the most part) and now I'm fighting keeping weight on her. The vet says she should have about 10 more pounds on her. Skinny is good, but my baby is apparently pushing the limit on 'too skinny'. I've tried adding a little something extra into her food (mostly some brown rice mixed with chicken), but I can't force her to eat when she doesn't want to eat any more. I've tried Satin (? I think that's the name heh) balls, but she doesn't seem to like them. I've also tried decreasing her exercise a little, but that seems to make her appitite go away even more. She's been de-wormed, she's on heart worm medicine, flea/tick/mosquitoes medicine and a few weeks ago she had a full physical including blood work, etc.… [cont.]

A. Try mixing in some puppy type balance diet food in with her adult food. Puppy food is higher in protein and calories to help with the growing puppy and this may help add weight to her. You could also try mixing wet food in with the dry food to give her more calories. Increase the amount of food you feed her at a meal or maybe feeding her two smaller meals a day may work better for her. More treats might also add some weight. My shepherd is also on the thin side, he currently weights 75 pounds, but he has only started putting on some weight since he turned 2 in November. He was always thin, like 60 to 65 pounds, and you could see his hip bones pretty good. He's finally putting on some weight and doesn't look so skinny. My vet told… [cont.]

Is my German Shepherd losing weight?
Q. I am concerned that my German Shepherd is losing weight. She is a not pure breed, but she has all the traits of a Shepherd, color, coat, head, etc. She is about 8 years old. When I was petting her today, I could feel her rib cage and where it ends. She was standing up. I don't recall that happening before. She is healthy and active. No problems except allergies. Plays with the other dogs as well. She eats regularly. I feed her two cups in the morning and two cups in the evening. Is this normal and should I take her into the vet for further examination?
Asked by JamesF in the US - Sat Sep 27 10:54:38 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It could be that she is putting out more than she is putting in. However, I wouldn't worry about it.. from what you describe.. being able to feel the last two ribs, this is an ideal weight for her. Perfect.

7 month old German Shepherd puppy needs weight?
Q. She weighs approx. 54 pounds. I have talked to my vet about her weight and he feels she looks good for her activity level...But, I think she still needs weight. Her hair coat is beautiful, she is growing and muscling out good, and you can't see any bones (you can slightly see her ribs)...But, she is not as good as she could be. I feed her Hundchen Flocken Puppy (Solid Gold) both wet and dry; this is the only food she will eat (she is a very picky eater). She will only eat approx. 3-5 cups of dry and 1 can of wet a day; mixed and split between 2 meals. I leave a bowl of dry out all the time. A. Stop worrying about it. They are a skinny breed all the time anyway, and at 7 months the last thing you want it a FAT GSD. As long as the dog has no parasites and eats, and is active...do not worry.

Q. He is now exactly 5 months and exactly 60 pounds. He gained 14 pounds in the last 31 days and is NOT overweight. Previous weights: 46 pounds at 4 months, 32 pounds at 3 months, 17 pounds at 2 months old.

A. Too much! He either IS overweight, or he is not a true GSD but one of the North American deviations, such as the NAmerican Ski-Slope Dog seen in AKC and GSDCAmerica rings, or the King "Shepherd". See for the average weights of genuine GSDs month by month. Averages aren't requirements, but the further from average something is, the less likely it is to end up as a typical example of that thing. Your lad is 20% heavier than average, which is a massive extra amount of weight. But scale weights aren't the most important thing, physical condition and interest in life are what counts. However, be aware that the earlier a dog's joints have to carry significant weight, the more likely the dog is to develop hip and/or elbow dysplasia. Also… [cont.]

Help my german shepherd gain weight!?
Q. My german shepherd is about a year and a half. He's a very happy boy, but I think he does have food allergies (My vet told me he may be chewing on paws because of this). He doesn't chew as much now that I put him on a duck and rice diet, but his poo is really runny (outside) and he's still really skinny, even though he seems to eat a good amount. He gets heartworm meds every month, and is updated on rabies.
Asked by clemitorclover - Wed May 27 21:28:19 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You may want to run the dog's symptoms past a different vet. While it could be food allergies, his chewing on himself ( itching) combined with the diahrrea could also be an indicator of internal parasites. You said he's UTD on shots and heartworm meds, which is great--but what about flea & tick prevention monthly? Even if he is also on that, there are insects and parasites that the preventatives don't block and can be picked up for a variety of reasons: exposure to another animal's infected poop--even bird droppings from a sick bird can create symptoms like those. Don't let it go too long with the poor guy with the runs--dogs can go downhill quickly if they dehydrate no matter what their age. Again--if your vet knows about the stool… [cont.]

A. That seems like an ok weight! I have a Shepherd that just turned 13 months he weighs in at around 70lbs! When he was 9 weeks he probably weighed about 15lbs! As long as she isn't being overfed and getting enough excercise then she should be fine! I wouldn't be too concerned about it! As far as who she is taking after its hard to say when they are that young but I can tell you that no matter what you have a great breed! My dog is very well behaved and has made a great pet! I would definetly make sure you get her plenty of toys! The harder the better because she will be losing her teeth across the next 3 months! How do I put weight on my German Shepherd?
Q. I have a 3 year old German Shepherd that needs more weight put on her. Don't worry I have brought her to the vet on 7/22/08 and the vet said she is perfectly healthy so it is not that big of a concern. But I like my animals to be of perfect weight, not under weight. She is a healthy, VERY active dog and has a hard time keeping weight on. We are feeding her high fat puppy food mixed with a half of can food and a cup of oat meal to try and get her to gain weight. A. Great reading, [Yashika] - you didn't even notice that the question was about a BIT.CH. For a dog that weight is extremely too light. [josh c]: Your bit.ch is somewhat under average weight, but that is better than being grossly over weight. will give you puppy averages up to a year old, but after that the limits in the International Standard of the GSD apply. You will see that she IS already within the allowable range for an adult. Note that the kl is a liquid measure. The measure you wanted was kg. Scale weights matter when it comes to working out doses for poisons (painkillers, vermifuges, etc) but what counts to the pooch is its condition. Assuming that your bit.ch has the correct short, flat coat of a GSD you can judge her… [cont.]
