Q. I live with my dad and we recently moved to a bigger place. We've had a cat for 3 years (got him at 5 months), he's my cat, and my dad has wanted a husky for a long time. We went to a shelter when we heard they took in a bunch of purebred huskies that the breeder could no longer care for but instead got a 1 year, 2 month old husky/shepherd/mix. She's very sweet and already housebroken and mostly trained, just can't be trusted alone (she tore up her bed when we left her alone Thanksgiving). We introduced the cat to her and she just seemed like she wanted to play, my cat was the only one growling!! But when the dog started eating the cat food (which gave her gas) we put up a baby gate that my cat can easily jump over but the dog can't. (It [cont.]

A. Breed profiles are generalizations. You are on the right track giving the cat a place to go where the dog is not allowed. As you said the dog appeared to want to play with the cat. The cat had a normal reaction to a playful dog. I believe if you train the dog what is acceptable behavior they can get along fine, but make sure you supervise their interactions until they seem very comfortable with each other. I've known huskies and shepherds that have lived happily with cats their entire lives. Think of it this way: I have personally heard many stories of parents suddenly deciding to drown their children in the bathtub for no apparent reason. That does not mean we should separate all children from their parents. As for the tearing up… [cont.]
