What are the affects, benefits, and costs of neutering a 3 year old German Shepherd dog?
Q. What are the differences in neutering a dog at an early (puppy) age as opposed to an adult dog? Will a dog that is neutered as an adult still be agressive towards other male dogs?
Asked by dukey1 - Mon Jul 30 20:39:57 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You do not have to go through the whole hormone issue. When adult males are nutured it takes about a month for all of the testorone to go out out of them. Also puppies tend to recover quickly. Nutering will not help with all of the agression issues.

Asked by pranav - Wed Jul 22 13:36:00 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should not want your dog to be dangerous. You should want him to be confident and not fearful. If he is dangerous and out to attack, he may one day attack you, other people, or other dogs unprovoked and you will have to put him to sleep and/or have to deal with expensive law suits, vet bills, etc. If you want your dog to be confident, you need to handle him with confidence.Fearful dogs especially need a confident owner. When he is being fearful, DO NOT coddle or pet him because he will take that as encouragement for his behavior. When you see other dogs while you're walking him, don't pay attention to the other dog at all. Just walk on straight ahead with your back straight. He may still whimper or freak out a bit but this will help… [cont.]

A. I feed my dog Life s Abundance from www.SafeFood4Pets.com It's an all natural food formulated by a wonderful holistic veterinarian. There's a great video on the first page about what is found in pet food today and what to look out for. Because I am also a rep, I feel like I've learned so much about how to choose pet food and what should be in the ingredients. If you go to the web page www.healthypetbiz.com and click on the button on the right hand side that says audio, it'll bring you to a page with some sound bites. The first one there is all about how to choose a food, aside from considering the ingredients. It's really interesting and makes some excellent points. The second one down lists all the ingredients and is an interview… [cont.]

A. Salmon oil is in a lot of the premium dog foods. I think for he omega fatty acids? That being said I would be careful with fish. I know my cocker spaniel has a very severe allergic reaction to fish. If you wanted to introduce something like that, I would do it in a really small amount and at a time when you can monitor your dog for most of the day.

Can I train an adult dog? I have a 1 year old German Shepherd that is very wild. Please help!?
Q. I have a 1 year old German Shepherd dog and she is very crazy. Ive tried training her but she shows no attention or she jumps ups or bites. She knows how to sit and lie down but that's about it. She is presently staying outside in a part of the yard but when i bought her when she was a little puppy i imagined her as my 'Lassie' dog, inside and my perfect companion. Is it too late to train her to be my perfect companion dog? Does anybody have any tips or training tips that could help me? And I was wondering if spaying her would make any difference on how tame she is because she is not spayed yet. Thx!

A. he's still a puppy, so a puppy kibble is still needed. Look for an all natural dog food at your local pet supply shop. You won't find anything worth feeding at your grocer's. I like Canidae. It is made from all HUMAN grade ingredients. Don't feed corn, soy, ar beet pulp. Ya gotta read the lables. Inova is good. Nutromax is good, but has food coloring so stains teeth. After 38 years of breeding dogs for show/pet, I have settled on Canidae, and wouldn't switch. You can look up home websites for any of the above to find your nearest dealer. (at his age, Canidae PAWS would be the best)

9 year old German Shepherd dog?
Q. 9 year old German shepherd? My German Shepherd is nine years old and is starting to sleep all day everyday. She was casually diagnosed by our vet with hip displaysia a couple months ago... physically you can't see any signs of it. The vet said she can still run with me (He said it was good for her). Anyways, This is very out of character for my girl... so I was wondering if anyone had any advice or has had a similar experience with the same breed? Please don't tell me to call my vet I am waiting for my vet to call me back:)

A. what do you mean your vet casually told you your dog have hip dyspepsia? You can just tell by looking at a dog...you need to do X-ray. You vet should be able to point out where the problem is. Go to a different vet...don't even bother waiting for his call back. German Shepherds are prone to hip dyspepsia but you will see sign...trouble walking, dog not wanting to walk...have trouble getting up, limping etc. And he should also either prescribe a pain medication or tell you what other options you have. My suggestion is to start her on glucosamine...that helps my dog who was "diagnosed of hip dyspepsia" by one vet and told by another that she has a mismatch bone in her hind leg but surgery is not an option for her because it might not help.… [cont.]

A. please feed your puppy esbilac with baby rice cereal for a week or two. then I would feed the puppy iams smart puppy for large breed dogs by six weeks. You may have to moisten it a little at first. we breed german shepherd show dogs and the litters are so large the mother doesnt always have enough milk for them for very long. This is what other top breeders and vets will recommend as well. the puppy is old enough to eat from a bowl as well. the best food in our opinion for the adult GSD is Royal Canine german shepherd 24. It is important for their hips and digestion to have the higher protein food. Enjoy your wonderful puppy.

A. You don't tell us enough for us to even start guessing. But real food for real dogs is NOT measured in cups - most of it will be raw animal protein. 11 is NOT especially old for a well-bred well-reared GSD. The grand-sire of my last 4 was still gaining Excellent show gradings at that age. I tell buyers that if they do everything right their pup will be alive at 1 year old. If it is still healthy then, it will live to 7. If it is still healthy then, it will live to 10. If it is still healthy then, it will live to 12. But from 12 to 15 (very occasionally 16) the remaining life-span is truly in the laps of the gods. Losing weight is due to either not eating enough proper food, or having something interfere with the digestion's ability to… [cont.]

My 3-1/2 yr old German Shepherd Dog is wrongly trained into feeding by hand & won't eat by himself. Need Help!

But now we are in a terrible mess as she and our son left today for her annual planned holiday, with both of us thinking that I would be hand-feeding him like I did on every vacation of hers for the last two years (he's three and a half now). But today, the first day, I had a big surprise waiting for me. When I approached with my hand full of food, he snarled at me so fearsomely I was scared he would grab at my hand so I let him be. Incidentally, of late he has been showing traits of irritable temperament due to his adolescence (the vets tell me this is normal and he would tide over!). Q. When we go on holiday we can only go for 7 days as he will not eat. The .kennels have tried everything to encourage him but he still won't eat anything. We love him to bits and it's no use saying a dog will eat when he is hungry, he won't. As soon as we sit down with him he starts to eat and it's as though he has trained himself to do this. A. Poorly bred GSDs are a dime a dozen. The breed is known for genetic hip problems, temperament problems, and eye problems. If you're going to do this, the LEAST you can do is plan to temperament-test your male, and get complete genetic testing done on his hips, elbows, and eyes. I'm not talking about taking him to the vet and having them give you a thumbs-up; I'm talking about spending the time and money to submit xrays to OFA/Pennhip, and have him cleared by a certified veterinary opthalmologist. The xrays can't be done prior to 2 years old, when he's considered physically mature. The same would be true, of course, of the b*tch you buy. In the meantime, you should seriously consider whether or not you even need to be making more GSDs,… [cont.]

A. That was the most vulgar title I've seen today. Calm down tiger. Chihuahuas usually end up being the more dominant of the household. They are smaller, and typically have HUGE attitudes and are usually more aggressive. If its the pack structure, thats how it is and thats how its going to be. Nothing you can do.
