A guard dog is a dog employed to guard against, and watch for, unwanted or unexpected people or animals.

Both guard dogs and watch dogs bark to alert their owners of an intruder's presence and scare away the intruder. The watch dog's function ends here; a guard dog is capable of attacking or restraining the intruder. For example, livestock guardian dogs are often large enough and strong enough to attack and drive away predators such as wolves. In cases where intruders are more likely to be human, guard dogs are sometimes trained simply to restrain an intruder with his owner's guidance, as in Schutzhund or K9 Pro Sports training. Occasionally, guard dogs are trained to attack human intruders, though this practice might be locally illegal.

Some breeds (such as Keeshonden) are excellent watchdogs but not excellent guard dogs because they bark loudly to alert their masters of intruders but are not given to attack behavior. Similarly, even very small but attentive dogs (among a few other species) may function well as watchdogs.

How to train a dog to be a good guard dog?
Q. How should i train a dog to be a good guard dog and even bite on command?
Asked by Dakota L - Tue Mar 10 11:57:20 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Only a Dobermann or other breed typically used for guard/protection work, bred with health, stability, function and the breed standard in mind would be a potential candidate to be trained as a protection/guard dog. Guard/protection work is the function for which the breed was originally bred. However, the average pet Dobermann would in all likelihood bark an alarm, but when faced with an attack would either defend itself or take flight. If an inexperienced owner fails to train and control a working breed like a Dobermann dog, there is the potential for disaster {usually for the dog} and a lawsuit for the owner. It s the people who fail to undertake research before they purchase and therefore don t appreciate the requirements of the breed, [cont.]

Q. I am thinking of getting a Japanese Akita for a guard dog, are they fine if left alone and outside with shelter. I will give the dog regular and good exercise as well as love.

A. Absolutely not. Akitas are very pack oriented, they need to be with their families or they develop personality problems. They require extensive socialization, tend to be dominant and are NOT for first time owners or those who have not owned dominant breeds. They don't bark unless they feel it absolutely necessary; in fact they have been known to stalk intruders rather than warn them away. Besides, why keep a guard dog outside? What's it going to guard? The area of yard it has access to? If you just want something to protect your house, get an alarm system, not a dog. Very Tenacious: Please learn something about the breed before you start yelling about it. EVERY country except the US and Canada has divided the akita into two separate… [cont.]

Which breed of dog is the best guard dog?
Q. Which breed of dog do you think is the all time best guard dog and why?
Asked by Snow Leopard - Wed Jan 14 18:05:33 2009 - - 20 Answers - 0 Comments

A. probably dobermans or rottweilers since they were actually bred to be guard dogs...same with german shepherds...the other 2 are probably a little scarier though...i dont know. Cane corsos i think are good too. definitely akitas...they were bred to guard...or at least be protective.
